What I've Been Watching Pt. 1

this week i've seen some really great films and documentaries. (don't judge me by how many films i watch per week)........

The Business of Being Born

this was really an incredibly informative film about birth and the practices of obstetricians. as a woman myself, who one day would want a child, it was really eye-opening to see the beauty (and ultimate pain) of natural home births and the uses of mid-wives.

The High Cost of Low Prices
so this documentary is quite devastating. growing up low-middle class, my family always shopped at walmart (and sam's club). heck, it was my grandpa's favorite place to go when he was in town. it was what they could afford. but the ultimate issue is that because the prices are so cheap at wal-mart, there are sacrifices being made elsewhere in the company- i.e, the wokers' wages, the work ethics over-seas, their environmental practices, and the list goes on. it's alarming. this is a must-see film, as it sheds light on the dark side of the 'american dream'.

Django
okay, so i'm a little late on seeing this. but it was AWESOME, as with most films starring christoph waltz.

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
this was fun to watch. it made me want to do a juice detox and clean myself from the inside out.

The Great Gatsby
again... another one i'm late on seeing. as a big fan of classic literature, i've read and studied gatsby in high school and college. the film was beautiful, but also strange and quite cartoon like. the soundtrack was fantastic. i love fitzgerald's story on the american dream during the jazz era, and the film followed suit quite alright.

The Vanishing of the Bees
did you know the bee's that do all the work for the colony are solely female? the male drones are only there to mate with the queen. this film made me cherish bee's immensely and understand their crucial role to the environment and survival of humans.

Animal Odd Couple
if you want to see a baby cheetah and puppy grow up together and become best friends, or a an elderly dog mother an orphaned fawn, or a goat guard and protect a deaf and blind horse, then this is imperative to see. i was pretty much in tears of joy the whole time.

Blackfish
wow wow wow. growing up in florida, sea world was only a couple of hours away. it makes me sick to my stoamch that i went there as many times as i did as a child. something has to be done.
